The Hungarian Francesco Illy arrives in Trieste after the First World War. He studied economics in Timisoara and worked in Vienna . It is ingenious and cosmopolitan. He falls in love with the city and a woman, and becomes a Trieste.
He begins to work in the field of cocoa and coffee , which from all over the world arrive in the port of Trieste.
In 1933 Francesco founded illycaffè . In 1935 he invented Illetta , the grandmother of espresso machines, and a revolutionary preservation method, pressurization, which keeps the quality of the coffee intact and allows it to be exported to distant countries. In the 1940s , illy jars reached Sweden and the Netherlands.
Ernesto , son of Francesco, graduated in chemistry and joined the company in the late 1940s . It gives impetus to scientific and technological research and creates an internal chemical laboratory. In the 1950s the company expanded and began selling smaller cans of ground coffee for consumption at home . In 1965 he moved to via Flavia.
In 1974 illy proposed coffee pods , to prepare an espresso just like at the bar in the office or at home. In 1988 he filed a patent for the digital selection of beans, which allows him to choose, one by one, only the perfect ones. The illy Art Collection cups, the new brand , designed by the American artist James Rosenquist and the Brazil Award for excellent growers, are from the 90s .
Today illy is synonymous with excellence and Italian taste in the world. Leading it is Andrea , one of Ernesto's sons.
